Welcome! I’m Sheen — a detail-oriented businessman by day, seat of the pants philosopher by night, U.S. Marine in a former life, active traveler and restless adventurer. I grew up gardening, fishing, crabbing, trawling, oystering and hunting with my family in South Louisiana and currently live in Southern California with my wife of almost 25 years and our two college student kids. “Farm to Table,” “Ocean to Table” and all of today’s sustainable concepts weren’t a “thing” back then — around our house it was a fun, interactive and family-centric way to enjoy and experience life together.
Growing up, my Saturday and Sunday afternoons had a unique flavor that has forever impacted the way that I live, love and eat; dining room tables covered in mounds of fresh seafood, vegetables, game and home-cooked delights, flying elbows and food bits, hilarious conversations and anecdotes, and hours long feasts with friends and family. Food and the entire experience of eating — the catching, growing, preparing, sharing and enjoying have become the landmarks by which I’ve charted my travels and journey through life.
About food — on a serious note: It’s the fuel for our existence. A disruption in our food chain, more than any other non-technical disaster that might befall us as a race, would catapult us from advanced civilization to utter barbarism in a matter of days, completely skipping over the more refined notion of anarchy.
The upside — I believe the closer we are to our food source and the better we understand it, the more inspired we will be to ensure that scenario will never happen. As long as we’re at it — doing all of the hard work of being engaged and interested partners in getting our food from the land, sea and air onto the table – why shouldn’t we enjoy every bite of the fruits of our labor? And, if every bite isn’t enjoyable, then I sure as heck would like to know why and how to fix it and I’ll let you know about that, too.
On this food-centric blog, I discuss how food, the people we share it with and the places we discover it can inspire, amuse, stimulate and transport us beyond the limits of the familiar into a realm without boundaries.
